History

To begin our journey into the history of our school we start from 1931,
to find that it was
Harold Langford who originally purchased 640 acres of land from
council and later named his land, “Springwood” after a spring in the
middle of his holdings. He later sold his property in 60 acre blocks
in 1958. It wasn’t until 1969 the suburb of Springwood was listed on
the market and the bush corridors soon became a thing of the past.
Roads, houses, industry, shops and of course schools. You can
read an
extract of a letter written by Lloyd Pickett for our school recipe
book 1993. (published with permission)
Springwood Road State School was opened in January 1974 with
approximately 200 children and a staff of 13, headed by Principal
Lloyd Pickett. The buildings then consisted of an Administration
block (hosting the library) C and D Blocks, Tuckshop and
undercovered area. Opening its doors at the same time as the
Brisbane floods, Springwood Road didn’t escape damage, as equipment
being stored was under water and had to be replaced. Students didn’t
commence lessons until the second week of the school year as a
result.
In 1975, saw State Preschools becoming a new concept and resulted in
a double unit being built to accommodate the fast growing population
of Springwood.
Within in two years of opening, in 1976 the school’s population was
well over 600 and 31 teachers as Springwood became known as “Nappy Valley”. The
school grew so fast the facilities were not enough to cope with the
growing numbers. Demountables became part of the school architecture
for years to come. A unique concept at the time was the ‘mobile
library’ that consisted of books being wheeled around on trolleys
from class to class. Eventually more permanent blocks were added and
with the ongoing beautification projects that were undertaken and
the bare oval took time before it became a playing field.
Many children helped prepare the oval by clearing the grounds of
stones prior to laying turf – however the grubs loved new grass ……
Turf then had to be laid again and Year 7 boys helped and become the
best turf layers in the business. By now the school had 1200 students
to cater for.
In the early years of the school the P & C spent many weekends
working on the grounds and undertaking fundraising ventures to
resource the school.
Much was achieved under the direction
of the principal at the time, Mr Dick Allen, together with a team of
loyal supporters, that saw Springwood Road State School become one of the best resourced and most
well respected schools in
the community, having a strong influence over the educational
outcomes.
Today we see Springwood Road State School with beautiful grounds,
immaculately kept by the school's Janitor Groundsman who takes
great pride in his work. Air conditioned Music room, Computer Lab,
Spacious Library and permanent buildings of Blocks C, D, E, F, G H,
Playing Fields, and magnificent Adventure Playgrounds, Tennis
courts, Hard Courts, Early Learning Centre. Staff now total 31
classroom and specialist teachers and 4 administration staff, 6
teacher aides and with Principal Lesley Vogan and Deputy Principal Alisha Le Brese.
The school P & C continues to play a very active
role in this school with working bees, volunteers and fund raising
ventures following in the true community spirit of past members.
